HOME It took one and a half years, 54 different countries, and 120 locations to complete Luc Besson’s and Yann Arthus Bertrand’s work.
On June 5th, the World Environment Day, we are able to watch their achievement on the Internet, in the theatres and television channels of 50 countries, and in Budapest’s Millenium Park. ![]() Luc Besson, HOME We get a bird’s eye view as we fly over the Kilimanjaro, the African savannas, the North Pole, the Easter islands, and we are awed by the fantastic images of the Earth’s biosphere and its indigenous population. Idyllic images of a beautiful planet. ![]() Luc Besson, HOME A shattering wake-up call interrupts our astonishment: burning oil torches, oppressive poverty, mountains of garbage; all pictures of a dirty, dilapidated planet. ![]() Luc Besson, HOME Which one is our true home? Our planet is a common experience of billions of people, giving us a chance to turn our attention towards Earth’s future. The movie takes us on a journey into more than 50 countries, and it’s a story full of miracles, surprises, questions, and apprehension; it teaches and spurs the audience into action. In its unique way, the heavenly cinematography shows the breathtaking, often wounded landscapes, from the depths of the coral reefs of Australia to the Gobi dessert, and the cotton fields of Texas to the heavily industrialized Shanghai. We can become part of an international movement through the soul shattering images; a bizarre rendezvous with Earth. ![]() Luc Besson, HOME In the last 50 years, the Earth went through more dramatic changes then in all the millennia which came before, as we find out from the movie. Following the release of The Earth from Above photographic album and television series, Yann Arthus Bertrand, the French nature photographer, a man devoted to environmental causes, took up another great cause with the producer of The Big Blue, Luc Besson, in the making of Home. The 50 minute movie shows magnificent aerial shots, wondrous waterfalls, waving polar bears, whales, the stench of metropolis, rivers with oil patches. ![]() Luc Besson, HOME The intention is to shake our humanity, since we only have 10 years left to change our habits of consumption. Luc Besson, as producer, shows us a new side; that of a sensitive photographer observing with concerned eyes our fragile planet from high above. In his eyes the world is a more stimulating place than for the rest of its mundane inhabitants. For him life is more mystical, revealing a multi-dimensional reality. ![]() Luc Besson, HOME In the course of the movie, we come face to face with emotions we don’t like to feel: On our planet: One billion are famishing. 13 billion hectares of forests disappear yearly. In the last 40 years, the thickness of polar ice has decreased by 40 percent. 5000 die each day from polluted water. ![]() Luc Besson, HOME In the view of the producer, as naïve inhabitants of our planet we believe that governments will help in solving our environmental problems. However, soon we have to realize that this is a mistaken belief. The leaders of the world and our countries don’t do enough. While they take a step forward, our planet takes ten steps backward. ![]() Luc Besson, HOME Humanity has to realize that only through united action can we accomplish anything for Earth. Even tiny steps make a substantial difference, such as changing our light bulbs at home to energy efficient models, being selective in garbage collection… If one billion people take those same tiny steps, that is already much greater progress than what the governments can accomplish. ![]() Luc Besson, HOME The intention behind the movie is not to make a profit, but to reach as many people as possible. The power of the movie lies in its immensity, that which causes us to reflect on the contrast between Las Vegas, built on a dessert, where thousands of liters of water are used for swimming pools and golf courses, as we see pictures of Indian women in saris, poke at the desiccated ground for drops of water. At such moments, we realize how crazy our world really is! ![]() Luc Besson, HOME
