BUDAPEST The 27th of JuneTwenty years of Hungarian Constitution “…In Hungary and in other European countries, 1989 was the year of wonders. In the rare happy moments of human history, it is not selfishness, hatred, ambitions or tyrannical urges, but benevolence and selflessness that lead millions of people to a new way. In 1989 Hungary and Europe went forth on new way. On the 27th of June Hungary’s national constitution tore down the iron curtain separating the country from West Europe. On the 10th of September, in spite of all the opposition, West Germany opened its borders to the freedom hungry, East German citizens heading to Berlin. The wall of Berlin that has separated Germany and Europe became compassable through Hungary; therefore it has lost its right to exist. Two months after the 10th of September it was knocked down. ![]() In 1989 something wonderful happened. The reunion of Europe has begun. Hungary is proud of having been able to do the first step toward freedom and opening the way for the reunion of Germany and the birth of the united Europe.” (This was a quote from the photo exhibition titled The 20th anniversary of the system change.) Looking at the pictures gave me the impression that before 1989 we were living in a hermit’s cave, without desire, fear and aim. We have been living in a vacuum and it never bothered us. Only after 1989 were all the lies and secrets got revealed. |
