LOS ANGELES For those art lovers living in the Los Angeles area, you are truly blessed indeed. Los Angeles and her many communities are a wealth of art in a variety of forms, everything from impressionist painting to sculpture.
One of the highlights for visitors to Los Angeles and locals alike is the Downtown Art Walk. From noon until 9pm on the second Thursday of every month, the downtown area features a self guided tour that spotlights all the wonderful art venues in the downtown area including museums, galleries and private collections. The tour is completely free and is a great way to enjoy some wonderful art. There is also a free art walk shuttle that transports visitors around the Gallery Row section of the tour. The tour is operated by Esotouric and is a restored 1940’s school bus. Just wave to jump on and let the driver know when you want to jump off. It’s a great way to spend an inexpensive evening. ![]() Gallery Row Gallery Row in Los Angeles features several wonderful galleries. One such private gallery is called Infusion. Infusion has over 3,000 square feet of exhibit space and is located in downtown LA, on south Spring Street. Kicking off in May, Infusion is featuring a group show featuring Henry Gallucio, Pacia Sallomi, Rachel Weisburger, Nils Hansen, Mara Zaslove, Ryota Sato, Andrew V. Gilman, Inge Dehenin, Yves Goyatton, Benjamin Soehnel, Mamadi Sidibe, Shaun Brock, Gabriel Fiscale, John A. Casper and also featuring resident artists Dover and Jill Abrams. This group show spans a variety of styles and mediums including paintings, photography as well as drawings. The Hive is another Spring Street fixture, but is interesting in that it features work from an organization called Global Art Exhibit. This organization seeks to further education for children in underdeveloped countries such as Cambodia, Thailand, Tibet and southern India. They raise funds by arranging special events and art auctions. The organization is staffed entirely by volunteers, which means that more of the proceeds go to help the children that need it the most. On the first Saturday of each month, The Hive opens a new show and specializes in surrealism style art. The Hive was voted the Best Art Gallery in 2007 by Downtown News, which makes it a must see when visiting the downtown area. Los Angeles Located in the Atwater Village area of Los Angeles, The Black Maria Gallery features an eclectic of art that can be described as anything but mainstream. The minds behind Black Maria believe that art should be thought provoking, and there collections reflect this. Coming to the gallery for May, Catia Chien, Dany Paragouteva & CJ Metzger will be featuring works, as well as Marisa Haedike on the Project Wall. The reception for these exhibitions will be held on Saturday May 9th at 7:00 PM. Located off of La Cienega, just a few short miles from the beach is The Cherry and Martin Gallery. This is a new location for this gallery and to celebrate, they are hosting their inaugural exhibit until May 16th featuring the works of Amanda Ross-Ho, Brian Bress, Daniel Dove, Holly Coulis, Nathan Mabry and Antonio Puleo. Another unique, and somewhat accidental, gallery in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles is called The Garage Gallery. The gallery was started when an artist friend of the owner asked her to store some art in her garage. She said why not have our own show, and the Garage Gallery was born. Now the Garage Gallery host a show nearly every Saturday and features local artists selling their work for reasonable prices. The Garage Gallery has a great atmosphere, and is in no way pretentious. It often resembles a great party instead of an art gallery. Chinatown Located in the Chinatown area of Los Angeles is Sister. Sister has several artists that show there regularly and a variety of styles to offer. Beginning on May 9th, Sister will be showing the work of Cal Crawford. Cal uses video, audio and sculpture to explore the metaphysical world. In the same area as Sister is The Box. The Box is a unique gallery in that it doesn’t limit artists to the “traditional” mediums of paintings, sculpture or drawing. The Box has a philosophy of encouraging non-traditional artists as well as encouraging a broader view of what art really is. The Box has a wonderful relaxed atmosphere that allows visitors to engage and discuss the art being shown whether it is painting and sculpture, or dance and music. Coming in the month of May, and showing through mid June is an exhibition of the erotic art work of Judith Bernstein. West Hollywood ACME is the creation of Robert Gunderman and Randy Sommer. ACME hosts a variety of artists in its alternative art venue, many of whom aren’t shown anywhere else. Currently ACME has two exhibitions through the end of May. The first is an abstract exhibition of artwork by Chris Finley. The second is group exhibition called Prescriptions. Because it is a group exhibition the styles and mediums vary. The Adamson-Duvanne Gallery features 19th and early 20th Century works of art from both European and American artists. All of the works at this gallery are for sale and they are all investment quality. Coming in May is an exhibition of still life paintings from a variety of artists including the famous Pablo Picasso. This is certainly not to be missed. Next time you are in the Los Angeles area, be sure to stop by and explore some of these wonderful galleries. As we mentioned earlier, this is nowhere near and all inclusive list. If you only have time to do one thing, try the Art Walk, this way you don’t need to go far to see and experience a lot of great art. In this article we’ll feature a few of the galleries in the Los Angeles area, but this is by no means all of them. There are hundreds of galleries in the LA area, something to please every art love. |
