BUDAPEST The 27th Pressphoto exhibition is now on view at The National Museum. This Hungarian Pressphoto exhibition is the biggest event that’s worry free. The writer György Spiró gave out the various awards in different categories during the opening. Most pieces that arrived were in the categories of the human form - portraits, nature, documentary photography, art and humor. Awards were handed out in 13 categories. There are also some prize winning photos in the exhibition which are a part of the Budapest Spring Festival’s program, and which are on show until April 26th. At the same time as the pressphoto exhibition is on, there will also be the release of the book entitled “The Year’s Photos”, which includes 119 photos, many of which are prize winning pieces. ![]() photo by: Sylvia Enten At the opening, György Spiró said: “People look at photos because we want to know something which is human, or from which we learn more from it’s photographer than from his subject.” According to him, if a photographer can put his own personality into a photo taken by him, then the viewer will also have feelings for the piece, bonding the viewer and photographer in a certain way. At this exhibition I found pictures that caused me joy, I had moments that felt like gifts to me. I saw my capital city, showers on the streets, the lights, the shadows, the yellow taxis, old stages, the popular musician, the player, the sportman, the excitement. The empty room’s four walls, the sadness of the street musician, the shelter’s hungry dog, the autumnal hill, winter’s snow, the water birds’ wedding, the bear’s night. A countless number of questions mix in my head as I go towards the exit: what’s the difference between dreams and reality? Are there more secrets in Life that we can possible comprehend? What is Death? Does reincarnation exist? Looking at these photos also bring up some ethical questions as well: what goal is there in popularity, in being honorable and in the protection of human dignity today in Hungary? Why are freedom of speech and it’s limits such important questions today? Does the press have a job to do? If it does, what is it? What is the situation today in Hungary concerning the informing of the public? How does daily politics effect photo reporters? Are photographers manipulatable? Is news making manipulative? Do the news and gossip press cross over? Why are shock and gossip news more popular than quality papers? Next year they’ll be another Pressphoto exhibition! And there’ll be questions... |
