BUDAPEST Anti-racism concert in Budapest’s Szent István park. May 16, 2009. Organized by the Hungarian Democratic Charter and the Gypsy Citizen’s Rights Movement. The posters show political quotes, the park is full of gypsy and non-gypsy performers, musicians, actors and artistic performers. Protest against aggression. In Hungary, their origins, skin color, thinking, or desires have given them a negative stamp, making them targets to physical threats. And their fears or not without basis. The mayor asked Budapest’s citizens to turn up in as many numbers as they could for this meeting and concert. About 3,000 came to the park that Saturday. One Methodist clergyman said: Racism’s murderous form is only visible in Hungary today, amongst all of Europe. Then there were musical performances: Judrom, Fekete Vonat, Khamorro, G-Allstars... musicians like the Dés-Snétberger duo, singers like Emilió, Andreas, Lajos Botos, Ágo Szalóki, and Ibolya Oláh with her song “Hungary”. The whole crowd sang the refrain along with all the stars on stage. Péter Geszti’s lyrics make a lasting impression on the mind and heart, forever: “There is a country, where I walked in my dreams: Hungary, where I saw my face in yours. Plenty of hugs, and being true to the cause. This is the face that I’ll keep, Hungary! I’ll believe in my dreams for the rest of my life...” ![]() Photo by: Ádám Bojár The average opinion is that when someone watches TV, reads the paper, or steps out onto the street and trips on a homeless person: everything is confused, shocking, horrible. Is this Hungary today? No, it isn’t. This is the politics of Hungary only. But sometimes we can just stay at home. We can read. Go to the theater, a concert, an exhibition. But firstly we can read, books, literature, Hungarian. Then we step into the other Hungary. A great Hungary. Into the Hugary of culture and literature. It is only art and culture that can set Hungary right again. |
